The Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) is one of four regions in Indonesia that have special autonomy rights. DIY is equivalent to a province, but is led by breeds from the Mataram Sultanate for generations. The center of government is at Keraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat, located in the heart of the City of Yogyakarta. After the Proclamation of Independence of the Republic of Indonesia (RI) in 1945, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX (The Sultan of Yogyakarta) and Sri Paku Alam VIII (The Duchess of Pakualaman) stated to the President of the Republic of Indonesia that the Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Sultanate Region and the Duchy of Pakualaman Region became the territory of the Republic of Indonesia, merged into a single entity declared as the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY). Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX and Sri Paku Alam VIII as Regional Heads and Deputy Regional Heads report directly to the President of the Republic of Indonesia.
