Like many Muslim countries, Indonesia holds Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran (MTQ) or Al Quran Reading competion as a national event. It has been one of the biggest competion held in the nation started from the lowest level of the country administration (Kelurahan) all the way to national level.
This competition was started for the first time in Makassar in 1968. It was national annual event then until 1977. From 1979 this event was held biennially.
This year, Indonesia will hold 25th MTQ in Batam Riau Island Province from 5-14 June 2014 involving 1.292 participants from 34 provinces competing in 7 branches.
The Organizing Committee of this year event is headed by the Riau Island Province Vice Governor Surya Respationo and supervised by the Governor Muhammad Sani.
The Astaka or stage for this year competition were built permanently around Engku Putri Square Batam. Surya Respationo was quoted as saying that the Astaka was built permanently so that after the MTQ is over it will turn to become the Islamic Civilization History Museum.
According to Raja Heri Mokhrizal, the Public Relation Head in the Governor Office, the Opening Ceremony will be held on 6 Juni 2014 at Engku Putri Square Batam. Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhyono is scheduled to officially opened the event.
This year MTQ is also held coincide with Indonesian Creative Product Expo (Pekan Produksi Kreatif Indonesia). This expo is held as business forum aimed at exhibiting and promoting creative industry product from all over Indonesia. This expo will be held at Islamic Centre Batam.
