The airline’s logo is a golden eight-pointed Mandala reflecting the eight characters of humanity and the eight elements in Javanese tradition, with a five-petaled lotus in its centre reflecting Indonesia’s five-principled state ideology, Pancasila.
Mandala Airlines commenced services to the Archipelago in 1969 at a time when Indonesia was re-building an economy devastated by political and economic problems.
Mandala air was named after a military operation aimed at integrating West Papua into the Republic of Indonesia commanded by the then General Soeharto who became Indonesian second President.
Initially owned by the KOSTRAD, one of Indonesian Army best unit, the airline was sold to Cardig International in April 2006 who in turn sold 49% to Indigo Partners. Both Investors recognized the huge potential of Indonesia’s growing market and the requirement for a well run modern generation airline.
The acquisition of Mandala by specialist investors heralded a period of significant change commencing with the rebranding of the airline and the addition of two Airbus A320 to the fleet.
In 2007 an experienced international management team was recruited with the mandate to aggressively transform the airline into an efficient, safe, reliable, modern generation company to provide added-value for the customers. The strategic goal is to grow Mandala Airlines into one of the leading airlines in Indonesia and the region.
Mandala currently operates an extensive network across Indonesia utilising a single fleet of modern Airbus A320s and A319s. With 30 aircraft on order, Mandala will grow at a rate of 25% per year.
